Assess You and Your Condition

1. Assess You and Your Condition

Firstly we’ll talk to you in depth about your condition. We’ll ask you if it’s a condition that happened after a specific ‘twang, snap or pop’ moment or something more mysterious that’s developed over time.

Beliefs and Fears

2. Your Beliefs and Fears

What do you believe it might be? What do you fear it could be? What impact is it having on your life? We’ll look to quickly allay these concerns with a combination of bio-mechanical knowledge, experience and up to date research to bolster your confidence in your body.

What do you need to do? Are we getting you marathon fit? Or fit enough to walk to the shops in less pain? Do you want us to patch you up? Or provide a strategy for a long term solution? We’ll discuss at length so we’re providing what you need.

Are you anxious? Angry? Laid back? Pretending to be laid back? None of the above? At your discretion we’ll talk about your past, present and future. Are your emotions affecting you physically? They may be a little, they may be a lot. It may be quite surprising. If you’re not comfortable talking about things just let us know – we’re happy to keep it physical.

The bit that hurts right? Usually not. How is the pain affecting the rest of your body and how you move? We assess your whole body to come up with a plausible explanation for your pain. We then test that theory with our hands on treatment. If you feel better, great. If you don’t we treat the next most likely culprit until you do feel better.

This approach enables us to identify which of the ‘most likely culprits’ is the most important for you. No two injuries are the same. This will inform both of us of the best way on which to build on the hands on treatment. Ensuring your plan to full recovery is specifically targeted to changing your movement pattern to get you a long term solution.

If we agree emotion is relevant to your physical well-being we will explore this at a pace you are comfortable with. Whilst we’re not psychologists we’re well used to helping people with the psychology of day to day life. If we uncover something that needs specific psychological help we have lots of friends who can help.

Breathe To Feel Less Pain

8. Use Relaxation To Feel Less Pain

Sometimes we need to improve physically to help us emotionally. Sometimes we need to improve mentally to improve physically. Most commonly it’s a bit of both. We finish the session with some relaxation breathing. More Relaxed = Less Pain. Building on what we have already achieved in the session.

Having looked at all aspects of life, both physical and emotional, we will have a clear pathway of what you need to do to continue to improve. Maybe targeted exercises, stretching or self-treatment. Or maybe some approaches to help you be a bit more relaxed. Whatever is most important to you.

What Should I Expect

Our aims are to enable you to feel how quickly your body can change, to give you greater awareness and to give you hope. We then ask you to incorporate this ‘new feel’ into sport or everyday life. You’ll better recognise the effect of physical and emotional stress and your body and so improve your response to it.

Whilst we can’t guarantee it most people walk out in less pain and more relaxed. But don’t worry if you don’t. Sometimes things take a little longer. Our therapists are always aiming to get you as fit as you need to be as soon a possible. In those rare cases we don’t have the answer we’ll point you in the direction of someone who does.

12. Will You Need Any Ongoing Care?

That’s entirely up to you and what you feel you need. Do we let you free back into the world to spread your wings? Or do we continue treatment with less frequency? Releasing any newly built up tension before it becomes symptomatic. Making sure you continue to do the right things to look after yourself. The choice is yours.
