Make The Change That You Want To See In Yourself
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2018, here’s hoping this year brings everything you wish for. Of course sitting there wishing for things is unlikely to bring those changes that you want so here’s our lifestyle guide on how to make those changes stick so this time next year you can look back on 2017 with pride.
New Year’s resolutions have been around forever. Wikipedia told me! Originating from various religions over the years. In our modern world they are used as motivation to make changes to lifestyle that we feel will benefit us. My favourite from last year was a friend who resolved to stay out later and drink more!
My personal resolution this year is to have more holidays! The classics are of course losing weight, giving up smoking, getting fit, spending more time with the family, working harder, working less, drinking less etc. The one consistent thing is that people rarely achieve these goals!
Why Do We Fail?
So why is that gyms are so busy in January but then back to normal by February? How is it that people fall short so quickly? One key to success is make your goals measurable. Some resolutions are easier to measure than others. Giving up smoking or drinking is very easy to measure. But how much weight do you want to lose? What does spending more time with the family look like?
It’s been shown that if you have achievable goals you are more likely to succeed. In the examples above you could say you want to lose a total of 2 stone in a year. Making it roughly 2 pounds per month. Spending more time with the family you may choose to block out Saturday morning every week to take the kids out to something fun.
How Can We Succeed?
The only way to truly succeed is to make a permanent lifestyle change. It can be something as simple as not having a biscuit with your cup of tea. Or can be a complex series of events, but all must become habit – and that’s the tricky bit.
So how do we maintain these positive life habits? The first thing is accountability. Blame no one but yourself! Don’t make excuses for yourself… “Well I wasn’t going to have a drink tonight but I’ve had a hard day at work and I deserve it”, “I was going to go for a run but it’s raining”, “Little Jonny has been playing up today and stressing me out so I ‘need’ a slice of cake to calm me down.”
We’ve all done them, those little conversations that go on inside our heads to justify failing. The longer you resist these temptations and replace them with healthy alternatives the more likely you are to form that new positive habit. Replace that beer / wine with a cup of herbal tea – you’ll reap the benefits in the long term!
Why Do We Have Bad Habits In The First Place?
Many of our bad habits are based on addiction. Alcohol, smoking, eating for a start. The best way to get over these addictions is to understand our feelings and emotions when we reach for our chosen poison and treat it at source. What is it that we’re covering up?
Well it’s all got a bit heavy all of a sudden, and so early in the new year! Don’t worry I’ll lighten things up again very soon. But the point I wanted to make is that whilst you are accountable for your actions don’t be afraid to get help. There are so many options and experts in their field just waiting to help you. If you have a bad back of course you come to us! If you need some help with your thought process you can get Counselling, Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy among others.
Make That Change!
Of course our best case scenario is that replace once addiction with another and choose to get addicted to exercise this year, train too much and require our services! But we’d much rather you treated the issue at source.
Before we finish lets talk about the worst option. The non-resolution maker. Perfect are we? I know few people have egos that large to think as much. Normally we give ourselves excuses as to why we can’t even start to change. “I’ll make a change when I get work under control”, “I’ll change when the kids are behaving themselves better”, “I’ll make a change when I’ve got everything else done.” Non of these things are ever going to happen! Get used to it and live for now.
If you haven’t made a resolution yet this is the perfect time to do it. Be the change you want to see. Don’t put it off until everything is done because it never will be. And that’s a good thing. As Michael Jackson sang when he looked at The Man In The Mirror… “Make That Change.”
