A Progressive Approach For A Different Way To Ease Your Back Pain In Brighton

At Brighton Physiotherapy & Sports Therapy we have a different approach to sorting back pain that we find more effective than using conventional methods alone. Firstly it’s important that we rule out anything nasty that isn’t going to respond to what we do. This will not be the case for the vast majority of people but we absolutely need to check. We will have a good idea or not over the phone if you’re in any doubt. Formalities done. Onto the interesting bit. You see most back pain doesn’t come from the back. Most of our clients, some of whom are in significant pain, have had scans with no or minimal findings. So where is the pain coming from? And this is the complex bit. The back generally is a scapegoat in terms of symptoms for other things going on in other parts of the body. If the front of our body it too tight, from for example too much sitting, too much running, too much stress or a combination of all three then the back has to work harder to oppose this tension that pulls us forwards. Because our back are fighting gravity rather than working with gravity it’s the back that normally screams first, not the tension at the front. The same is true from the side. Are you a bit wonky? Is one side of your pelvis higher than the other causing shortening, tightening and ultimately pain on one side of your back?

Back pain treatment brighton

“Jamie’s treatment has completely changed my life. The back pain that I’d been putting up with for two decades has almost completely gone, along with neck and shoulder problems that weren’t even the focus of my treatments. As well as approaching the physical sides of my pain, he’s helped me to make simple changes to my lifestyle which have opened up a whole new world for me, as well as making me feel ten years younger and giving me a whole new perspective on my future. Friendly, easy-going and extremely reassuring, I can’t thank or recommend them enough. Just brilliant.” – RC

And then there’s the sensitisation of the condition. In other words just how nuch does it hurt? In our experience it is rarely the mechanics of the body that are the problem – as in slipped discs, stress fractures of the vertebrae etc. It’s more likely the fear of what it could be and the protection that holds us in pain. Fractured vertebrae aside protection rarely helps. To further complicate matters if we fear our backs might stop us doing something important to us – or example working, playing with our kids, doing sport that is important for our mental health – then our brains will pay more attention to it and so we will feel more pain. And there you were thinking it was just your back that was the problem! We need to reduce the sensitisation, re-align the body and get your moving with more freedom and more confidence. How we do that exactly is unique for every individual will normal entail correcting movement / postural patterns that are keeping us in pain. Addressing any fears or concerns about our backs. And giving us more confidence in the robustness of our backs and a tool kit to help ourselves to keep the pain free fluid movement for years to come.

“I saw Jamie for a bad back caused (I think) by lifting a toddler repeatedly in and out of a car. Jamie literally helped me walk taller by diagnosing the source of the problem, working on it and, best of all, teaching me some techniques to self fix in future. I can’t recommend highly enough.” – DT
