Sciatica is not as scary as people make out. We’ve seen it many times out our clinic and helped people recover back to being their old selves. However, when you’re in the middle of a bad bout of sciatic pain it may seem that there is no end in site at all. Thankfully our experience and current research would suggest otherwise.
With some detailed physiotherapy knowledge and experience applying the right techniques at the right time can help alleviate those horrible sciatic symptoms. What Is Sciatica?
It is irritation of the sciatic nerve which can cause pain along any of the sciatic dermatomes (skin sensation of the nerves), namely L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3. This may not make much sense to you but just look for the areas on the picture below.
Your pain can be along any of those lines in the leg. It can be mild or severe. It can be a deep seated pain, pins and needles, numbness or just uncomfortable. It may, or may not be accompanied by back pain as well.
If you have sciatic pain then I’m sure some these sound scary. If you’re pregnant or had a car crash there’s nothing you can do about that, but your pain can still be eased. All of these conditions are legitimate factors in contributing to sciatic pain but more recent research and experience from our Progressive Sports Therapy treatments suggest that sciatic pain can be eased and even cured using our simple and effective treatment protocol.
We have many clients who are now pain free with all of the conditions above. Yet no pain. So how does it work? With a more detailed understanding of the anatomy we look at all factors that can affect the “tension” on your sciatic nerve. As shown in this schematic pain and tightness anywhere along your back from your neck to your toes can affect this tension and therefore your symptoms.
You may have noticed aches and pains elsewhere in your body when your sciatica is at it’s worst. These may be along the back side of your body, but not necessarily so. They can be anywhere. Any pain elsewhere in your body may be useful to help us understand where the true source of the problem lies and get you a better long lasting result.
Our approach simply looks to remove these limitations in other parts of your body to take pressure off the affected painful regions. It also means that we don’t have to press the bits that hurt and can be extremely painful. Which makes for more enjoyable treatment sessions for everyone involved!
